Well, Hello There!

Welcome to the personal site of me, Alison Hutchinson! I am a personal style blogger and the founder of Styling My Life, a blog that documents my daily looks, makeup how-tos, inspirations and some of the things I love.

I was born in Port Alberni on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada — a small fishing and logging town that wasn’t too accepting of anything Alison-Hutchinson-Styling-My-Life-Dawson-Devereaux-Short-Jacket-Night-5“out of the norm” or fashion forward. I would constantly scour fashion magazines for any and all inspiration they could offer — cutting out hundreds of pages to plaster all around my walls. They would have to be updated regularly and I suppose this was my original mood-board of sorts. I couldn’t necessarily adopt most of the styles while living there, but the first moment I could, I bought a one way ticket to the UK to see what the rest of the world had to offer. I spent the next three years traveling around the UK, Europe and Australia, during which time I really came into my own and experimented to my heart’s content. I gained an entirely new level of confidence and I’m so thankful for this opportunity I had at a time when I was just trying to figure out who I was.

_MG_9028Once I came back to Canada, I enrolled myself in the marketing program at BCIT in Vancouver where I received a diploma in Marketing Management. I always had the intention of going straight into a career in fashion once I had graduated, but life had a different idea. There were so many good programs that specialize in fashion and I just couldn’t compete with my lack of experience. I ended up working in b2b sales in the technology industry — a career path that totally lacked passion for me. It wasn’t until I met Oliver (my boyfriend and photographer of my blog) that I realized that I could create my own career in fashion — one in which I am the creator and have total control over it’s vision and content.

With Oliver’s encouragement and skill behind the camera, I created Styling My Life in March of 2012. It began as a passion project — something to feed my creative needs and fill that void from the industry that I love so much. It has turned into so much more and I am so excited to now be able to call this blog my career. I can’t wait to see what the future has to offer and I hope you will join me on this adventure!

xoxo Alison
